230406 Night watch

I’m sitting at the helmsstation and watch all around me. All means the sea, which is very smooth. It also means the sky, enjoying the formation of clouds at the horizon and their illumination from the moon just above me only hidden by the main sail. And also the instruments. We are sailing an extrem closed hauled course because I would like to gain every possible degree west of south.

The wind is with 8 – 9 KN not bad thus such a course is possible.

I need to watch the wind and current direction carefully to see when it’s time to go on the other tack.

Just half an hour ago, the wind went from WNW to almost WSW, the current was too strong in direction to SE and I tacked. I had to do it single handed because all crew members slept. When I was ready with the sail maneuver and looked at the COG display and saw that we are going NNE. Schock! Why? Quick look at the Axiom MFD (Multi Function Display) and I saw that the wind had changed again and in the wrong direction. This all within about 10 min. I had 2 options. All sails down and drifting or back on the STB tack and sail according to the new condition for sailing S – SW. Such is sailing as well.

What will come up next?
