Yesterday, after doing the last provisioning, we lifted the hook and motored the short distance into the Big Bight on the west side of Isla Colon. Tob, my new member and the son of an old friend of mine got his first experience in steering MaRe by compass until we reached The mouth of Big Bight.
BTW, Navionics Maps are extremely poor for this area and can not be used. I prepared my route using Eric Bauhaus’ Panama Guide. An excellent book, I have on board. It’s a recommendation from SV Aninxi and I’m grateful for it.
Very carefully I navigated into Big Bight. At the very end we dropped the hook at 8 m and the anchor got a good hold.
The quietness of the anchorage is incredible. Around us mangroves and behind there is jungle. From there comes the one sound to be heard. I assume it’s the bawling of monkeys. Then the sound of birds. That’s all.
Twice fishermen in dugout canoes came and tried fishing with beets and lines.
As it was hot, we took a refreshing jump into the water and then fixed a salad because we were a bit hungry.
Then we got rain. First a bit but then it increased and we had to use the cockpit enclosure. As it was raining already heavily, we got a free freshwater shower.
The doors we kept open. Through them we saw the sea surface being mottled by the raindrops. It was just a very peaceful and tranquil atmosphere.
