Dennis ran to the trolling rod and smiled the smile of his life. He had a fish on the hook. Carefully he pulled it in. I prepared gaff and pliers. Tjasa jumped out of her bed and came in night gown and camera in her hand to take videos and pictures. Finally, after 13 days of trolling with various lures, there was a fish on the hook.<\/p>\n
When it came closer we saw it was a dophin fish, a mahi-mahi. Very good. The first fresh meat.<\/p>\n
I secured myself before going down on the stern. Brave as I am, I was not afraid to get wet feet in my shoes.<\/p>\n
Then there was the mahi-mahi with it’s green to golden color gradient. Beautiful and so delicious.<\/p>\n
I was thus down on the least step of the stern, got the line in my left hand, while pulling the mahi-mahi closer, I looked for the gills to get the gaff into them, when I saw that the dophin fish did not bite into the lure but had the hook on his back. Just as if Poseidon put the fish on the hook to just make Dennis (mostly!) and the rest of the crew very happy.<\/p>\n
Oh happy day…<\/p>\n
Just in the moment, I saw the hook in the back of the mahi-mahi and the connected danger that the fish can get off of the hook, I wanted to get the gaff somewhere in the side of the fish, to pull it out of the water in direction of the frying pan, the fish flapped heavily around, and got off of the hook.<\/p>\n
Oh unhappy day!<\/p>\n
What is the lesson learnt? The Northern Pacific is fishless and the Southern Pacific has at least one mahi-mahi. Dennis is poised to get this fish, next time properly on the hook.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
