The boat is Privilege 435 designed by Marc Lombard and built by Alliura Marine, in Le Sable d’Olone, France, with the serial number 33. The solid and strong fiberglass building started in 2004 and commissioning was in 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marc Lombard’s design is that of a robust sailing catamaran for sailing comfortably, safe and fast short and very looong distances. She is not designed as one of the modern “floating villas” being made for motoring from one marina to the next and calling this sailing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She proved in all the years I’m sailing her, her reputation of being solidly built, sailing fast, with a excellent longevity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somewhere I read she is a ” ‘bluewatercapable’ residence, designed specifically for longterm liveaboards “. Living on her non-stop since 2021, I only can agree to that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is built with 4 cabins and 4 heads, so enabling up to 8 people to live on board comfortably. Galley and salon are arranged midships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first thing one sees is her fractional rig, the forestays are attached to the mast below the top point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mast, is bent by construction on purpose to move the pressure point of the main sail a bit backward. It’s height is 16 m above deck and has one solid spreader.thing one sees is her fractional rig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is stayed not only by 3 “steel lines” like most catamarans, but with 6. They are the forestay and the innerstay in forward direction and the cap shrouds and lower shrouds at both sides supporting the mast to the side and backward direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I attached mast steps so I can “walk” up the mast easily by myself. This proved over the years as very good; when needed I quickly can go up in the mast and do what needs to be done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking from a bird’s perspective on to MaRe, she looks like a trimaran but she is a catamaran. This very special design gives a lot of additional storage space in the bow area and makes makes her more rigged than without it<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this center storage room there is a 100 m long 10 mm stainless steel anchor chain to enable anchoring even in deep water. All the fenders (large volume almost no weight), spare ropes, jerry cans for water (empty) and fuel (2 contain 40 diesel), engine oil, for emergency a foldable anchor, and 2 propane tanks for 10 kg cooking gas, are stored there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MaRe’s Rocnan anchor of 45 kg is double oversized for safety reasons. Several times I was at anchor with her in 7 Bft winds and my anchor alarm did yell me out of my sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her sails give a lot of flexibility to adjust to the wind and wave situation:
– Fully Battened Mainsail (64 m2)
– Furling Genoa (49 m2)
– Gennaker (123 m2)
– Round sail 9 m diameter, a simple to fly real down wind sail for winds between 15 – 40 KN.
– Jib sail (20 m2)

Its 123 m2 are more sail than the genoa plus the full main sail. It is the light wind sail for 70 deg -180 deg AWA.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The cockpit also contains 2 storage spaces for all kind of things needed on a boat but the other one is for something I never want to use: the lift raft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Going inside the boat one feels immediately the coziness of the cabinetry made from warm cherry wood. For long distance sails I wanted more storage room. The design of the additional cabinets I got quickly together myself and an excellent carpenter in Cartagena, Spain, realized my idea in cherry wood in a way that nobody ever recognized the furniture is built at two different times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The galley is small, which enables a good working stability while doing kitchen work in rough seas. No need to tie up oneself to not fly around when a wave rocks her. Tying up is needed in the large kitchen designs of catamarans build mainly for charter business. Working area in the galley is sufficient. Two fridges, one is in the galley, give enough storage for things to be cooled. For cooking and baking a had stove and oven is built in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beside the kitchen, but separated with a half height wall and cabinet for dishes and special liquids for humans, is the saloon with a big round table where eight people can sit around comfortably. A nap can also be done on the sofa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the same level there is also the “navigation corner”. Center point is the chart plotter with some instruments at its side and above it. Thus, sitting at the navigation table allows to see the entire electronically measured situation of MaRe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On both sides there are stairs down into the hallway of each hull. Down there, the warm cherry wood of the cabinets and storage spaces dominates the impression. Non wooden items which are in each hull is at port side the second refrigerator and on starboard side a small 3 kg washing machine. Both device make long distance cruising comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cabins are layout that everyone sleeps perpendicular to the moving direction of MaRe. For me this sleeping direction is more comfortable because it is not necessary to stabilize one’s body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Energy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Energy is an important ingredient for life on land and more even in the middle of an ocean. There are four forms of raw energy available on MaRe: Wind, sunlight, streaming water, and last but not least Diesel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wind pushes MaRe forward and via a very efficient SuperWind 350 wind turbine it is converted into 12 V electricity. Sunlight is only converted by solar panels into electricity. The same is valid for streaming water, which lets a hydro-generator spin. Diesel the “food” for MaRe’s two Volvo MD2040 diesel engines, which deliver about 32 kW\/engine to propel MaRe forward and charge the 12 V batteries on board. Diesel is also the raw energy for the 4 kW generator on board. This generator is a key part on board and makes life comfortable by delivering 230 V power for the 180l\/h Dessalator watermaker, the little washing machine, for charging the batteries of the power tools, and charging all 12 V batteries. Batteries means a total of 7. Each engine has for safety reasons its own independent AMG 100 Ah battery. The other 5 are combined parallel to one block of service batteries having a capacity of 550 Ah. Except for the starting current for the engines, the service batteries deliver the 12 V electricity for all other systems on board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
